715 more UK child maintenance cases a month stay out of arrears after machine learning flags payments at risk, DWP estimates

The UK’s Department for Work and Pensions estimates that 715 more child maintenance cases a month now stay out of arrears. The National Audit Office reported the figures on October 21.

AI that listens to water pipes helped Northumbrian Water save about 6.4 million litres a day last winter

Northumbrian Water fixed more than 1,000 listening sensors to 149 km of pipe in north-east England, and AI picked out the sound of water escaping underground so technicians knew where to look. Over last winter’s high-risk months, the utility says, the project helped save around 6.4 million litres of water a day. In September it won a national UK monitoring award.

An AI copy of her voice, built from older recordings, delivered it. The Lords Chief Whip called it a first in a British Parliament.
