AI picked out 98 million bat calls from 310 English woodlands in Britain’s largest bat survey, finding rare barbastelles where few records existed
England’s National Woodland Bat Survey recorded 310 woodlands for 9,734 nights, about 90,000 hours of sound. AI built with UCL and the University of Edinburgh picked out more than 98 million bat calls, and 19 expert verifiers checked a subset. The survey found every British bat species except the serotine, plus rare barbastelles in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset where records were sparse.
