The result is a free interactive map and database of hundreds of thousands of voyages. It shows coal topped the cargo lists and Europe made up about 80 percent of England’s overseas trade in 1696–97. - [Google DeepMind’s AI model called Hurricane Isaias’s Florida Panhandle landfall while physics-based models pointed toward Louisiana](https://hooraymachine.com/story/safety-deepmind-ai-model-called-isaias-landfall): Hurricane Isaias hit Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 storm on October 9. Google DeepMind’s AI model, which the National Hurricane Center has used in its official forecasts since 2025, pointed to the western Florida Panhandle from the start, while conventional models first sent the storm toward southeastern Louisiana. A preliminary HurriLab analysis found it timed landfall within a few hours, three days out. - [715 more UK child maintenance cases a month stay out of arrears after machine learning flags payments at risk, DWP estimates](https://hooraymachine.com/story/public-uk-child-maintenance-ai-flags-missed-payments): The UK’s Department for Work and Pensions estimates that 715 more child maintenance cases a month now stay out of arrears. Each month a machine-learning model scores about 100,000 up-to-date cases for the risk of a missed payment, and caseworkers contact the parents most at risk first. The National Audit Office reported the figures on October 21. - [AI checked 1,176,380 tunnel photos this season and found the 384 showing endangered Cape Town toads using their road underpass](https://hooraymachine.com/story/science-cape-town-ai-spots-toads-in-tunnel-photos): Cameras in six toad tunnels under Peninsula Road in Cape Town’s False Bay Nature Reserve snap a photo every 15 seconds, all night. This season that came to 1,176,380 photos. An AI model built by AIMS South Africa student Joshua Salako picked out the 384 that show an endangered Western Leopard Toad, and the Nature Connect team confirms every one. - [An AI camera in a County Antrim milking parlour is helping the McMaster family spot lame cows in their 300-strong herd much earlier](https://hooraymachine.com/story/human-mcmaster-dairy-ai-camera-lameness): George McMaster started farming by milking eight cows in a byre and checking them with his own eyes. Now an AI camera in the milking parlour near Islandmagee films each of the family’s 300 cows every day and flags changes in how they move. His son Jack says it picks out lame cows the family would have missed. - [Machine learning listened to wild elephant choruses in Kenya and found the overlapping rumbles carry clues about what the herd is doing](https://hooraymachine.com/story/delight-ai-decodes-elephant-rumble-choruses): Researchers at Earth Species Project, ElephantVoices and the Amboseli Trust for Elephants ran machine learning on 902 rumble recordings from wild elephants in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park. The models named what the elephants were doing from overlapping choruses better than chance, and during reunions and group plans, the callers’ rumbles grew more alike as the exchange went on. - [An AI listening network estimated how many singing indri lemur families live in a Madagascar forest, and it landed close to the real number](https://hooraymachine.com/story/delight-ai-counts-singing-indri-lemurs): University of Turin researchers hung 26 recorders in Madagascar’s Maromizaha forest and used an AI model to pick out the songs of the indri, the world’s largest lemur. Their peer-reviewed estimate of 5.55 indri groups per square kilometer came close to the known 6.17, a promising way to count a critically endangered species without disturbing it. - [AI listens to bee buzz to track pollinator activity](https://hooraymachine.com/story/science-umass-ai-counts-bees-by-buzz): Ecologists at UMass Amherst and Cornell trained two AI sound models to pick bees out of field recordings, including telling honey bees from bumble bees. In a peer-reviewed study, the models’ counts closely tracked trained observers, and they now run inside Raven Pro, a sound tool many wildlife researchers already use. A recorder in a flower patch can stand in for soapy traps that kill bees. - [Children’s National’s AI calls in extra ER staff before sick kids give up waiting, and busy-day waits improved more than 25%](https://hooraymachine.com/story/health-childrens-national-er-surge-forecast): Doctors at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., and data scientists at Virginia Tech built machine-learning models that forecast, every hour, when seriously ill children are likely to leave the ER without being seen. When the forecast trips, backup doctors and nurses are called in. The hospital says waits on its busiest September days improved by more than 25%. - [AI that listens to water pipes helped Northumbrian Water save about 6.4 million litres a day last winter](https://hooraymachine.com/story/public-northumbrian-water-ai-listens-for-leaks): Northumbrian Water fixed more than 1,000 listening sensors to 149 km of pipe in north-east England, and AI picked out the sound of water escaping underground so technicians knew where to look. Over last winter’s high-risk months, the utility says, the project helped save around 6.4 million litres of water a day. In September it won a national UK monitoring award. - [AI watching nearly 1,300 hilltop cameras is now first to spot 51% of California’s wildfires, its director says](https://hooraymachine.com/story/safety-alertcalifornia-ai-first-to-spot-51-percent): Alert California, a UC San Diego program, runs nearly 1,300 cameras on the state’s fire-prone peaks, and since 2023 AI has scanned the footage for smoke. In 2024 the cameras beat 911 callers to 636 fires. In 2025 they beat them on more than half of about 3,600 incidents. This summer the program’s director said AI now spots 51% of California’s wildfires first. - [Baroness Campbell spoke to the House of Lords in her own once-clear voice, rebuilt by AI from old recordings](https://hooraymachine.com/story/human-baroness-campbell-ai-voice-lords): Baroness Jane Campbell has spinal muscular atrophy, and since 2012 an assistant has read parts of her House of Lords speeches. On October 13 she wrote her Health Bill speech herself. An AI copy of her voice, built from older recordings, delivered it. The Lords Chief Whip called it a first in a British Parliament. - [AI combed birdwatchers’ casual notes and flagged 29,345 that may describe wildlife encounters](https://hooraymachine.com/story/delight-birdwatcher-notes-ai-wildlife-encounters): Birdwatchers often add a quick note to a sighting, like “Mixed with bohemians.” University of Michigan researchers had AI screen 632,169 of those comments from Michigan eBird records and flag 29,345 that may describe birds flocking, feeding or chasing off predators together. Checked against a student’s hand sorting, a second AI sorted about four in five correctly, in minutes. People still check the work. - [A hobbyist and his AI helpers spotted a possible super-Earth. NASA’s planet hunter takes a closer look Oct. 31](https://hooraymachine.com/story/delight-hobbyist-ai-super-earth-candidate): Pavel Rabtsevich, a product manager in Spain with no astronomy training, had AI coding agents search public TESS data on 126,246 stars. One star dims for about two hours every 3.18 days, a hint of a planet about 1.4 times Earth’s width. The TESS team approved a closer two-minute watch starting October 31, and he posted his predicted dimming times first. It is still a candidate. - [Patients texted their seizure monitors, and in a simulation their feedback cut false alarms by about 80%](https://hooraymachine.com/story/health-penn-epilepsy-patient-ai-chat): In a Penn Medicine epilepsy ward, 13 adults used a smartphone chat that could see their live EEG. They asked about seizures and sleep, flagged false alarms, and in a later simulation those labels cut the detector’s false-alarm rate by about 80%. Five people asked to take the app home. It is a hospital proof of concept, not outpatient care yet. - [An on-the-spot AI eye check nearly doubled specialist visits for people with diabetes in Tanzania](https://hooraymachine.com/story/health-tanzania-dr-screening-referrals): At 24 hospitals in northern Tanzania, people with diabetes got their eye-screening result from AI before leaving the room, plus a face-to-face talk about what it meant. Among those who needed a specialist, 35.9% went within eight weeks, compared with 18.2% of people who heard by phone weeks later. Tanzania's health ministry plans to expand AI eye screening. - [Dane County's AI assistant took 24,000 non-emergency calls in its first month](https://hooraymachine.com/story/safety-dane-ava-nonemergency): Since mid-August 2026, Dane County's AVA voice assistant has answered the non-emergency public-safety line so human dispatchers can stay free for 911. Spectrum News reported more than 24,000 calls handled in about a month, with county officials saying there were no major mistakes. Callers can still ask for a person; emergencies still go to 911. - [An automatic oxygen dial keeps patients in range 85% of the time](https://hooraymachine.com/story/health-save-o2-oxygen-titration): In a 300-person U.S. hospital trial, an automatic oxygen dial kept patients in the target oxygen range 85% of the time, versus 63% with usual nurse and therapist adjustments. Time spent too low on oxygen also fell. The device was studied under an investigational exemption and is not yet cleared for routine U.S. use; the trial did not show fewer deaths or shorter stays. - [Beginners fixed about 90% of flaws in AI-made 3D print designs with InstructMesh](https://hooraymachine.com/story/delight-instructmesh-printable-creations): In a UIST 2026 study, 12 beginners used InstructMesh to mark flaws in AI-generated 3D models and ask for repairs with words or sliders. An independent expert judged 89.7% of the 156 flaws fixed. People still have to spot the problems themselves, and the tool doesn't guarantee a safe, successful print. - [AI pre-visit interviews took better eye-patient histories than residents in a randomized trial](https://hooraymachine.com/story/health-eye-care-history-interviews): In a 172-patient randomized trial at a Guangzhou eye hospital, an AI interview agent scored 17.7 points higher out of 100 than ophthalmology residents on the quality of the patient histories it gathered before appointments. Its interviews took longer, 11.2 minutes against 3.1, and the study didn't show better health outcomes or faster visits. - [AI lesson assistant Aila saved primary teachers about 49 minutes a week in an English trial](https://hooraymachine.com/story/k12-aila-planning-time): In an EEF-commissioned randomized trial with 464 primary teachers, those encouraged to use Oak National Academy's Aila reported weekly lesson prep for their class falling from about 3.3 to 2.5 hours, and their materials were rated no worse. Planning time was self-reported, and the ten-week trial didn't test whether pupils learned more. - [Be My AI describes signs and logos for Pam, who has declining vision](https://hooraymachine.com/story/everyday-reading-signs): In Vision Australia's September newsletter, Pam describes using the Be My AI phone app to read signs, logos and other visual information herself, without calling a friend or a volunteer. It's one person's account, not a study, and it doesn't replace mobility aids or make navigation safe. - [Students using an AI science tutor beat usual revision on topic tests in a 644-student trial](https://hooraymachine.com/story/k12-science-revision): In a four-week randomized trial in English secondary schools, students assigned the Medly AI tutor for biology, chemistry and physics revision scored about 2.6 marks higher out of 35 on short topic tests than classmates doing their usual revision. The company funded the preprint, and about 31% of students missed the final test. - [AI shortlist led Cornell biologists to a protein that switches off part of cell transport](https://hooraymachine.com/story/science-cell-transport-switch): Cornell researchers used AlphaFold to shortlist likely partners of Arf1, a protein that directs cargo inside cells, then confirmed in lab experiments that the little-studied Avl9 switches Arf1 off. Related DENN-domain proteins may do the same. It's basic cell biology with no treatment yet, and it isn't a cancer switch. - [AI finance tutor raised Boston University MBA final-exam scores 2.6 points in a randomized trial](https://hooraymachine.com/story/higher-ed-finance-tutor): Online MBA students at Boston University who were randomly offered an AI tutor that made them work through finance problems scored 2.6 points higher out of 100 on the instructor's own final, with results for all 86 students in the study. It was one small course, and the September preprint isn't peer-reviewed yet. - [AI cooling control cut one Frankfurt data center unit's electricity use by 10.4%](https://hooraymachine.com/story/energy-frankfurt-cooling): At Telehouse's Frankfurt data center, etalytics' AI software tuned cooling-tower temperature and pump flow on existing equipment, and one of five cooling units used 10.4% less electricity over months of live operation. The figure is company-reported and not independently audited, and savings for all five units are still projections. - [AI scan reader found 51 overlooked liver lesions, 15 malignant, in a 10,333-patient trial](https://hooraymachine.com/story/health-liver-second-reader): In a Nature Medicine single-arm trial in routine care, clinicians working with an AI tool that reads liver CT scans found 51 lesions that had been overlooked, 15 of them cancers, leading to 37 amended radiology reports and specialist reviews. The trial had no comparison group and didn't test longer-term patient outcomes.
